Why Silikal Mortar Systems Outperform Traditional Resin Mortars

Silikal mortar systems are engineered for speed and performance, setting them apart from conventional mortar solutions. Thanks to their unique formulation using Silikal reactive resins based on methyl methacrylate (MMA), these high-performance mortars cure extremely fast—often within just one hour after application. Unlike traditional resin mortars, such as those made with epoxy resins, Silikal mortars offer rapid curing even in varying temperatures, making them ideal for time-critical flooring and repair projects.

This combination of ultra-fast installation and temperature-independent curing gives Silikal reactive resin mortar systems a clear advantage in both industrial and commercial settings where downtime must be minimised.

While it’s widely known that cement-based mortars are commonly used to repair concrete, these traditional mixtures—comprised of cement, sand, and optional aggregates—come with significant limitations. Cementitious mortars set hydraulically with water and can be applied to damp surfaces. However, they:

  • Only cure above 0 °C, limiting their use in colder environments

  • Require long setting times, delaying project completion

  • Offer low flexibility and limited resistance to mechanical wear and aggressive chemicals

What’s less known—but increasingly important in modern construction—is that concrete repair can also be done using resin-bonded mortars. Instead of relying on cement as a binder, these advanced mortars use synthetic resins (such as methyl methacrylate or epoxy) to bond mineral aggregates. This innovative approach not only matches but often exceeds the compressive strength of traditional concrete.

In fact, resin-based concrete repair mortars outperform standard mortars in durability, chemical resistance, curing speed, and long-term performance. Despite some initial skepticism about using synthetic materials for structural applications, resin mortars have proven to be superior in both strength and resilience.

The Silikal R17 mortar system is engineered for high-performance concrete and surface repairs, offering excellent adhesion and long-lasting durability. Each system includes a 15 kg bag of filler and a 2-liter can of hardener liquid. When mixed, the two components form a pourable, reactive resin mortar that is easy to apply and cures rapidly.

For vertical or sloped surfaces, Silikal offers SILIKAL® R 17 thix, a thixotropic variant designed to stay in place without sagging. As with any professional-grade repair material, proper surface preparation is essential. To ensure maximum bond strength and long-term performance, it’s recommended to apply a primer such as SILIKAL® R 52 or R 51 before the mortar is used.

A standard set of SILIKAL® R 17 covers approximately 1 m² at a thickness of 1 cm, making it an efficient and precise solution for localized repair jobs. Additionally, special grades of SILIKAL® R 17 are available to suit specific technical requirements and project conditions.
